2010 RALLY
The second Annual Commercial Truck & Bus Rally at Pembroke successfully built upon
the foundations that were created at Ta Qali in 2009 underlined the interest this event
produces. Continuous events of any type always fall foul to circumstance at some time
or another and regrettably we were hit by two disasters in only our second rally but still
managed a good showing. We lost a number of overseas visitors due to the travel
restrictions created by the Icelandic volcano fall out and then had it topped up with
perhaps one of the few overcast days with intermittent rain in the midst of a number of
sunny days. If anything kills an event in Malta or anywhere for that matter it is rain.
Nevertheless, in spite of an estimated 60 vehicle loss (which would have been a 50% +
on last years turnout) we still managed a higher crowd level although not to expectations
or high enough to warrant the full range and cost of the additional facilities provided. This
in itself caused some financial concerns but in the end thanks to our sponsors we
managed just to break even. I make this statement because this aspect will always
determine whether or not the event continues to run every year which is the wish of
everyone. The event is financed by the Regal Restoration fund with some help from our
sponsors and I am not afraid or proud to report an example of the things we have to
endure. One man spent considerable time at the rally free of charge and whilst inspecting
the Regal was asked to make a donation to its restoration. He put a one cent coin in the
tin. Fortunately however we still attract people with some sense of decency and
appreciation of what we are trying to achieve.
One positive aspect that came through again this year was the number of new vehicles
that appeared in addition to the large number that should have appeared and further
promises of visitors to being yet further new vehicles next year. Once a series like this
gets underway it is obviously quite critical that you do not show the same vehicles at least
in the same state every year and there is certainly no concerns about that. Even our
regulars such as Bezzina pulled out their Mighty Antar, Ballut the Iveco Deutz pump, Cancu
with the Routemaster amongst many others seen for the first time at the Rally. Newcomers
from the private sector dared the weather bringing out fully and part restored vehicles for
which we remain extremely grateful. However, two vehicles in particular caught the visitors
attention in the old Maltabus DBY364 now BUS364 and the partly restored website
sponsored 1946 AEC Regal coach chassis. 364 now completely refurbished and sold in the
UK leaves Malta for good a few days after the rally. The AEC Regal further down the
restoration road still needs a lot of work but more on that in the Rally Restoration section.
Both vehicles under the care and restoration of Zinnu Bus & Coach Works.
Regrettably, the AFM again turned down our invitation, the Italian Military Mission because
they have turned over all their vehicles to the AFM and the Malta Police pulled out at the last
minute with an estimated 10 vehicles. The Civil Protection kindly provided some vehicles and
again the clubs were in good support including members from the Old Motors Club, American
Auto Club, MVCC and MHVT which again reflects the success of the rally with all these
setbacks. But enough of the dialogue now move on to the 2010 Photogallery and enjoy the
fruits of our labours. We have largely restricted the images to the new vehicles in attendance
but many shown in the 2009 gallery also attended. My thanks go to Dave Gothard, Marco
Zammit, Daniel Spiteri and Martin Phippard for permission in using their images on the this
website. See you next year but meantime keep visiting the website which will be continually
updated throughout the year.
